AI and Code: Two Projects from GitHub Next

With a background in programming languages, I’ve joined the GitHub Next team. I’ll describe three GitHub Next projects that represent my initial forays into using LLMs in the context of programming tooling: “Copilot for Pull Requests” – applying LLM summarization to pull requests and our experiments with injecting the summaries into the social coding conversation, “Summarization for GitHub” that applies summarization pervasively to the technical artifacts we see throughout GitHub, including entire repositories, and “Equipping GPT-4 with Numeric Calculation” – a project that points the way forward to how LLM-based AI, code generation and traditional computer science will combine.

Biography

I am a Principal Researcher at GitHub Next specializing in programming languages and AI-driven programming systems. I am responsible for the design of the F# Programming Language, and one of the originators of GitHub Copilot X, a set of GPT-4 driven demonstrator programming technologies that enhance and extend the capabilities of GitHub for the era of AI-integrated software engineering. I combine a practical approach and deep experience in delivering cutting-edge technologies through real-world channels. I work with developers, researchers, GitHub and open source communities to make better technologies, and, through that, make people more productive and happier.
