Rik Arends

Makepad: Mobile, desktop and web application development in Rust

His early career saw Rik utilizing C/C++, which solved the performance needs of the type of rich media applications he built but often resulted in unstable code. He then switched to JavaScript and other web technologies. Although these offered code stability, they in turn lacked the desired performance. Makepad is built with Rust, a language that marries the two requirements of performance and stability, presenting a fresh opportunity for finally doing things right. Rik will showcase what this new approach makes possible, how it allows for a reimagined developer workflow and where things are heading. Building Makepad, a new programming environment and UI system for Rust. Think Visual basic, but for Rust. Running on desktop and mobile natively, and web via WASM.
