GenAI is no-doubt creating a new technology era. LLM’s “unlimited” scalability and generality continues to surprise our imaginations. The speed of GenAI innovation continues to beat our expectation. The amount of resources required to sustain GenAI innovation is mind boggling. The role that industry and academia play in GenAI research and innovation is noticeably shifting. It can be argued such phenomenon open two exciting and urgent questions. One is how industry and academia can work together better to respond the broader challenges each is facing. Two is how to explore frontiers and exploit fundamentals to create new trajectories. The speaker will share his thoughts and perspectives around these two topics.

Biography

Song Zhang is VP Research Strategy and Partnership at R&D, Huawei Technologies Canada. He oversees Huawei Canada R&D planning and research partnership, being instrumental in building sustained R&D growth and capabilities. Song has over 28 years experience in Canada’s ICT industry. Before joining Huawei Canada in 2010, Song worked in the industries of wireless, broadband communications products and technologies development, as well as ICT technologies IP licensing. Song graduated from University of Toronto in 1996 with a M.A.Sc degree in digital communications.
