Semantic Technologies for Industry Digital Twins

Digital twins are virtual representations of physical assets, systems, and processes that are becoming increasingly popular in industry to optimize operations, minimize downtime, and enhance product quality. However, the full potential of digital twins can only be realized if they become part of the broader enterprise ecosystem, leveraging data from multiple heterogenous sources. Semantic technologies, and in particular Virtual Knowledge Graphs (VKGs) provide a standardized way of representing data from diverse sources, and accessing them in an integrated way. Hence, they have emerged as powerful tools for integrating digital twins with enterprise applications, IoT devices, and other systems, enabling real-time monitoring and analysis of asset performance, optimization, and predictive maintenance. In this talk, we will explore the role of VKGs in the development and deployment of digital twins in industrial settings, highlighting the benefits that can be achieved, and discussing the associated challenges and opportunities, including data governance, privacy, security, and scalability.

Biography

Diego Calvanese is a full professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy), and Wallenberg Guest Professor in Artificial Intelligence for Data Management at UmeƄ University (Sweden). His research interests concern foundational and applied aspects in Artificial Intelligence and Databases, notably Virtual Knowledge Graphs for data management and integration, Description Logics, Semantic Web, and Data-aware Processes. He is the author of more than 400 refereed publications in Artificial Intelligence and Databases, with more than 36000 citations and an h-index of 76, according to Google Scholar. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI), and of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA). He is the originator and a co-founder of Ontopic, the first spin-off of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, founded in 2019, and developing AI-based solutions and technologies for data management and integration.
