Biography
Stratis Viglas is Huawei’s Chief Database Architect and has made significant industrial and academic contributions in a career that spans two decades in research and development. He has previously held positions as the head of Google’s BigQuery query processing stack, the lead of Databricks’ Photon engine, and the Chair of Data Management on New Hardware at the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. He has written numerous research papers on topics covering distributed processing, query optimisation and execution, data storage, hardware and software co-design, and integration between database systems and programming languages and benchmarking, while he has also received multiple awards for his work. He is currently leading Huawei’s Edinburgh Research Centre database research team.
